I originally wrote this in August of 2011. Enjoy it. NOTE* since writing this, annual gun deaths, INCLUDING suicides, have dropped, while over 12 million new guns have been purchased in the US civilian market.
Responding to people who oppose gun ownership is getting boring. And MOST of these same people fully endorse ObamaCare. So I thought it would be fun to point out some things to them they may have overlooked (or they just don't give a damn about the facts, they just want us helpless!) So I compiled these statistics from the mentioned sources. NOTE the fact that I even used the stats from an avowedly anti-gun group for the firearms deaths. I do not vouch for their accuracy, and in fact consider their inclusion of suicides as part of the stats as ridiculous (because if the people DIDN'T shoot themselves, they'd probably kill themselves some other way). But I'll leave them in for the hell of it. Also note that the doctor-induced deaths are ONLY for those deaths that occur IN HOSPITALS, not ALL doctor induced deaths- THAT number is closer to 225000 per annum, rather than the 195000 used below.
Medical IN HOSPITAL malpractice and doctor error deaths annually in the US- 195,000.
Firearms deaths annually- about 35000. OF course, this number includes 18000 suicides annually, and about 300 "legal intervention", with no mention about whether the "legal intervention " was intentional or accidental.
Please note- this table is from an anti-gun doctor's group, DOctors Against Handgun Injury" a group that considers handgun ownership a "public health problem".
What this means to me is that we must ban doctors immediately to prevent all these un-necessary deaths. And I must say, as a victim of a near fatal incident of medical malpractice, I think this could be a very important thing to do. There are 1.5 million doctors in the US per
If we do the math, this means that every year, 1 in 7.7 doctors kills someone. It is estimated that between 43 and 55 million households owning at least one gun exist in America. Doing the math, this means that 1 in 1400 firearms owning household will be responsible for a firearms related death (remember, this includes suicides who would have used something else accounting for over 50% of these deaths, )and it doesn't differentiate between legal gun ownership and criminal gun ownership of the firearm involved. This means that for every firearm related fatality, there are 181.8 doctor related deaths. You are 181.8 times more likely to die from a doctor than a gun, and you can choose not to own a gun, but everyone visits a doctor!!
For shits and giggles, please note that IF we eliminate the suicides, the rate goes to 1 in 420 times more likely to die from a doctor than a gun, owned legally OR illegally. even though the ownership stats don't deal with illegal guns, and the death stats ignore whether the gun was owned legally or not. (author add-on, using the 2011 stats, but done in 2014)
